The Challenge
The management of Remembering Our Friends Memorial (ROF), in Second Life, wanted assistance to plan and build an extension to the SIM to foster community, provide revenue and create an event area. Additionally, the integrity of the memorial and respect for the memory of the people who are remembered there was a height priority. The memorial grounds were designed with a woodland bucolic theme, featuring open meadows and a dense forest. Animals populate the environs and their sounds are heard throughout the SIM
Aside from the physical requirements of the SIM build and landscaping, management services were required to manage rentals and provide concierge services. Promotion of the community as well as planning and management of events was also requested. The goal was to create a beautiful SIM that was self-supporting from revenue gained through rentals and fund raising.
Our Solution
The village of Stonewick was created on a sky platform above the ROF SIM. This this decision was made in deference to the need to keep the memorial's peaceful and respectful atmosphere intact. Two large areas were created, landscaped in the requested forest theme and several charming thatched British rental cottages were constructed. A chapel that also served as a community center was built.
The other area was fitted as an event and gathering space with forested areas, a waterfall and a pirate ship themed event stage area on a large pond. The entire land was designed to feel grounded and without the sense of being high in the sky.
A resident manager was recruited to provide concierge services, event planning, as well as sales and marketing.
Results
The project exceeded the client's expectations and met the requirements requested.
- The cottages were rented and created revenue.
- Several events were scheduled, including fundraisers for Remembering Our Friends Memorial and Relay for Life of 2011.
- A community was created.
- The event venue raised funds to support ROF and the causes it supports.
